Autumn 2008 Shoe Guide
Performance Training
Tuesday, 1 April 2008

PERFORMANCE TRAINING SHOES are recommended either for racing or, if you're biomechanically efficient, for training. They have varying degrees of support and cushioning, but what characterises them is that they're generally lighter (most weight around 285 grams) and fit like a glove

ADIDAS ADIZERO TEMPO
A$180 NZ$200
WE SAY For a performance shoe, the new Tempo has a lot going on underfoot. The midsole is built around two plastic heel plates that slow side-to-side movement, giving the shoe additional rearfoot support. A firm section of foam in the shoe’s forefoot provides a solid base for toe-off. Recommended for faster-paced runners with high arches who want a lightweight shoe or those with normal arches looking for a speedwork or race-day shoe.
WEAR-TESTERS SAY “Excellent lightweight trainer, but the laces kept slipping, which made it hard to keep a perfect fit.”
– Ken Cavagnolo, 27
“The shoe was lightweight and snug, like a racing flat.” – Scott LaPrath, 44
WIDTHS Standard
WEIGHT 290g (M) 245g (W)

ASICS GEL-DS TRAINER 13
A$219.90 NZ$250
WE SAY The forefoot overlays have been removed on this update, so there’s less chance for chafing and irritation. This helps give the toebox a bit more room. Runners who felt the Trainer 12 was too snug should take a look at the 13. The laces are off-centre, following the actual topline of the foot for a more natural feel. Another nice bonus is the drop in price. Recommended for biomechanically efficient runners or as a racing shoe for runners who train in stability shoes.
WEAR-TESTERS SAY “A great shoe, but not enough support for longer runs.”
– Bethany Allen, 25
“Overall I liked the shoe, but it felt too narrow in front” – Andris Roze, 24
WIDTHS Standard
WEIGHT 270g (M) 217g (W)

NIKE AIR ZOOM HAYWARD+ 3
A$160 NZ$200
WE SAY The Hayward now has a Nike Free–inspired segmented midsole with a minimal upper design. According to our lab tests, the Hayward is the most flexible shoe in this guide. While it looks more like a retro fashion shoe, the Hayward is a performance trainer reportedly based on a sketch from Steve Prefontaine’s notebook and features a funky tribute to its designer (“Pre 51–75”) emblazoned on the tongue. Recommended as a racing shoe for efficient runners who like the retro look and flexible feel.
WEAR-TESTERS SAY “I love the simple design.” – Jamey Lobdell, 44
“A great shoe for racing.” – Brian Hendricks, 35
WIDTHS Standard
WEIGHT 278g (M) 232g (W)
