I wasn’t a big runner until my mid-30s. Now I run three to four times a week, averaging around 50Km per week. I mix up long runs (15–30Km), short tempo runs (6–10Km) and sprints. I’ve run 10K races, half-marathons and a marathon two years ago.

After the marathon my girlfriend and I bum-slid down the hotel room stairs because we couldn’t walk them.

My perfect run is first thing on a crisp autumn morning, with not a breath of wind on the glassy harbour. My dog Paddy and I set out for my “Old Bag Run”. (Don’t ask me why I call it that!) It takes me through my neighbourhood’s back streets, over two bridges and around a bay. It has some nasty hills, but also some spectacular views.

To fit my run in before I have to be on set, sometimes I set the alarm for 4.30am. You’d think I’d be more tired, but it actually perks me up for the day.

With my crazy schedule I often have to seize the moment, so I don’t have time to rope in friends. Having said that, one of my girlfriends and I have started running with the Sydney Striders on Sundays (30km runs). Finding a running club and buddy did wonders for my marathon.

I love running with my dog Paddy – most of the time. One morning at the oval, I was determined to beat my 1K PB but halfway around Paddy decided to interject, tripping me so badly I must have done two somersaults. I limped home with two bleeding knees and a bruised ego.

I’m inspired by the members of my 12-Week Body Transformation program (www.12wbt.com). It’s one thing to be a super-fit athlete and run, it’s another thing to be 30 kilos overweight, nervous, muscle-sore, unfit and self-conscious. They’re proof that just about anyone can learn to run and, more importantly, learn to enjoy it.

Running for me is like meditation. It washes away my daily stresses and puts me in a positive, creative headspace. When I run I feel alive and strong. I feel connected with my surroundings; I feel connected with myself.

I've been running for a few years but only about 5k at a time, this year I decided to step it up and push myself to 10k, which I have done, and now I have registered for the stampede in melbourne, I hope to eventually build up to a half marathon and from there who knows, I'm a late bloomer as I am in my 40's but that's not going to hold me back :)

Ive always been inspired by you and biggest looser Ive only got serious the last year about my weight and nutrition as my dad died of a massive heart attack at age 52 172 kilos,I weighed 120.3k, I decided to get a personal trainer best thing i ever did ive lost 36 kilos I do bootcamp,I just love your posts your a true ambassoder to woman a very inspirational an motivational women just want to say thanks Ive just started running 4k I suck it up and do it not sure im loving it but do you start too anyway just thought to say I think your a legend and keep being you!, Xoxo =)

I struggle to even get around the oval at boot camp. Frustrating, upsetting and annoying as I'm so out of breath, so behind everyone else and then struggle to do the next lot of exercises and always feel out of control.

Michelle you are just amazing ! I did your 12WBT and this year I ran the Melbourne 'Run for the Kids' 14.3km. I'm still not 'loving' running but am determined to keep at it. Debs have you tried 5k101 ?? That's how I started, it's free and very effective.

Its interesting reading where other people started - I was never a runner - I hated it! PE at school was always a struggle. 2 years ago I reached 107.5kg, and finally had enough, I saw a Naturopath, began a vegetarian and started to exercise and watch what I eat....unfortunately, I started to yoyo...until now. I put my foot to the pavement - one after the other and started working in building distance, I ran the City2Surf, Blackmores Running Festival (3.5km), and in between training and focusing and trying to push myself a little further. Yesterday, I ran the Sri Chinmoy 10km run, placed 86th form 181 runners and managed to do it in 58min14sec. I've now entered another 6 races over the next few months....oh, and now weigh 86kg...and closing in on my target weight.

I did your 'learn to run' program with 12WBT last round and am so proud that I can now run 5mins without stopping. I too hated P.E as a teenager but now I am LOVING running 2-3 mornings a week and am getting faster 1km times every 4wks. I am looking toward what is next as i am doing 'rolling intervals' on my own for this 12wks following my first 12wbt round. Im feeling stronger and fitter each time I go out. Thanks for the inspiration. x
