A golden night in Australian athletics saw three Australians secure medals at the world indoor championships in Doha, Qatar over the weekend.

Olympic pole vault champion Steve Hooker and Australian team mate Fabrice Lapierre (long jump) both won gold and long jumper Mitchell Watt took bronze.

By day two of the world indoor meet, four Australians remained in the competition- shot putter Scott Martin placing eighth to round out what was left of the Australian team.

Hooker’s highest vault came on his third and final attempt at 6.01m having sailed over 5.80m on his first attempt.

Although he was unsuccessful with his three attempts at the world record height of 6.16m, Hooker was more than happy with the result, adding to his string of successes.

Lapierre secured his maiden indoor championships with a jump of 8.17 metres in the long jump pit at Aspire Dome.

Narrowly trailing was Watt, with a jump of 8.05m securing the bronze.

Scott Martin made his mark at the Dome with a shot put of 19.76m putting him into eighth place.

Hooker and Lapierre became only the fifth and sixth Australians to have ever taken gold at the world indoor championships in its 26-year history.
