Solo Runs! PBs! Multivitamins!
Q I joined a running club for motivation and company while training. But then came of barrage of invites to non-running activities. Am I destined for solo runs? – CAROLYN D.
A I’m confused, Carolyn. What is it about these invitations that’s so unpleasant? The frequency? The forcefulness with which they’re extended? (“Join us for coffee! Do it now!”) Sounds to me as if your club mates are just trying to make you feel welcome. If you’d rather keep your social and running lives compartmentalised, simply respond to their offers with those three magic words: “No thank you.” Say it with a smile, and remain your usual, friendly self on club runs. Over time, the social committee will get the picture and stop asking.
Q Are PB and PR – as in personal best and personal record – interchangeable? A friend called to tell me about her PR, and I had no idea what she was talking about. Maybe it’s a country thing? – BARB S.
A I used to think PB stood for “peanut butter,” and PR meant “Puerto Rico.” The short answer to your question, Barb, is yes – PB and PR are interchangeable. You tend to hear PB from Australians, New Zealanders and Brits and PR from Americans.
Q I’d like to start taking a multivitamin. Any good recommendations?
A Yeah. Skip the multivitamin. Eat a reasonably balanced diet, get good rest, and hydrate. You’ll be fine.
